The Virgin Mary the Mermaid ( Παναγία η Γοργόνα - Panagia Gorgona) comes from Greek Orthodox Byzantine iconography inspired by a myth about mermaid that helped sailors during a storm. Here comes my humble interpretation of the motive :)
