Perhaps there is some truth in this narrative, even though just about 30 Africans out of over 800 have been awarded the prize. And Africans have been awarded in all five categories of the Nobel prize, admittedly infrequently. However, when last did you visit your secondary school's science laboratory ? Did you like it? Have you seen the curriculum? Have you observed how teaching and learning are organised? When was the last time you heard an endowment worth $1m had been established by any of our public universities towards the enhancing of STEAM or STEM programmes?

Finally, according to the most recent data from the UNESCO Science Report and the World Bank, the average expenditure on Research and Experimental Development (R&D) as a percentage of GDP for the African continent is approximately 0.5%. This is significantly lower than the global average, which sits around 1.7%, and far below the investment levels of research powerhouses like Israel (4.9%), South Korea (4.6%), or Germany (3.1%).

This plays out poignantly when you check the global innovation index too. Africa and the Global South must up our game
