The $23 trillion tantrum: on the West’s imaginary China problem

The Financial Times reports on new research claiming it would cost Europe and the United States some $23.6 trillion over the next 25 years to “end their reliance on China” in critical industries. That is close to a trillion dollars a year, to be spent for the sole purpose of not trading with the country that makes things better and more cheaply than anyone else.

The FT explains that “the vulnerability of European and US economies to Chinese coercion was highlighted last year when Beijing imposed export controls on critical rare earth metals in response to US President Donald Trump’s threat of imposing 145 per cent tariffs on imports from China”.

Notice the sleight of hand. Trump threatens a 145 percent tariff – a flagrant act of economic aggression, in open violation of WTO rules and every norm of international trade. China responds, in self-defence, with targeted export controls. And yet somehow China is cast as the coercive party.

The “risk” from which the West now proposes to spend twenty-three trillion dollars “de-risking” is not some malign Chinese plot. It is entirely self-created. China has never sought to weaponise its industrial dominance except in direct retaliation against attacks upon it. On the contrary, it has spent decades offering the world cheaper goods, cleaner energy and cooperative development. The only reason any of this counts as a “vulnerability” is that the West has decided to treat its most important trading partner as an enemy.

Genuine “de-risking” requires no new mines, no reshored factories, no doubling of the EU budget. It requires one thing solely that the West treat China as an equal, abandon the tariffs and the tech war, and build a relationship on the basis of mutual respect and mutual benefit. Do that, and the “risk” evaporates overnight.

Spending trillions of dollars on an (almost certainly futile) attempt to decouple from China is not a realistic economic strategy; it is a very expensive tantrum.

This week, we became an international joke, with Gardai withholding identifying information about the prime suspect in the murder of Jamie Carney, the USA woman living in Killarney.

A well-intentioned 2015 law, introduced at a time when most asylum applicants were successful and there was genuine concern about persecution of the applicant or their family back home in a rogue state, is now a complete ass. Not only are 90% of asylum applicants rejected, but we have significant crime caused by asylum seekers, who enjoy anonymity. We can't even name the person suspected of a Jihadist mass-murder plot (see our largest press group below explaining why, it's the 2015 law!).

When you can't identify a prime suspect in a hot murder manhunt, then you're a joke of a country, and this should have been to the fore of the national agenda this week. Instead, Ireland's top TV current affairs programme #rtept , which covered the murder, didn't hold the Government to account for the law and lack of identification. PS, the presenter of #rtept is the sister of the justice minister. Joke.

De manier waarop Chat Control er –als een dief in de nacht– is doorgeduwd, is werkelijk schandalig en een democratie totaal onwaardig.

Ter herinnering: het Europees Parlement had dit dossier eerder al twee keer eerder tegengehouden.

Deze week werd vervolgens een procedurele kunstgreep bovengehaald: een zogenaamde spoedprocedure waarbij een gewone meerderheid van de aanwezige parlementsleden niet volstond (?) om die tegen te houden, maar een absolute meerderheid van ALLE Europarlementsleden nodig was.
Maar velen waren al op verlof vertrokken natuurlijk…

En dus stemde een meerderheid van de aanwezige Europarlementsleden opnieuw tégen.

—> Maar omdat de uitzonderlijk hoge drempel niet werd gehaald, werd de spoedprocedure toch goedgekeurd en kon Chat Control alsnog versneld worden doorgeduwd.

Als een aanwezige meerderheid tegen stemt, maar die meerderheid door een procedurele truc niet volstaat om het voorstel tegen te houden, dan is het moeilijk nog ernstig te nemen wanneer Europa zichzelf een toonbeeld van democratie noemt.
