“The Rehearsal Is Over — The Stage Is Still Hers”
The final instruction has been given. The company has gone home, the front lights have fallen dark, and somewhere beyond the curtains the old theatre is settling into silence.
She remains.
The script rests in one gloved hand, its pages already marked with every entrance, pause and carefully measured word. Her red leather bodice and narrow black skirt belong to the daring production still waiting for its first audience, but the authority with which she wears them belongs entirely to her.
Perhaps she is repeating a difficult passage in her mind. Perhaps she simply wants to feel the empty stage beneath her heels before applause, expectation and other people’s opinions return.
The rehearsal is over.
Yet beneath the last warm light from the wings, the stage has never looked more alive.
With respect, ❤️
