In 1970, Afeni Shakur, the mother of rapper Tupac, and 20 other members of the Harlem Black Panthers were charged with plotting to kill police officers. They faced a possible 350-year sentence, all while Shakur was pregnant.

Under intense pressure from authorities, the group was pushed to turn against one another. Shakur, despite having no law degree, chose to defend herself in court.

During the trial, she successfully got an undercover officer to admit he had tried to provoke the Panthers into violence to undermine their movement. Her defense was so strong that all 21 defendants were found not guilty.
