When you micromanage employees, you:
→ Destroy trust
→ Lower morale
→ Increase stress
...all while gaining absolutely nothing.
Let’s do this instead:
→ Praise in public.
→ ...and critique in private
→ Let people work remotely

The Peter Principle is alive and well in NHS management. 🚨 Senior roles often filled by experts promoted beyond their (leadership) competence, impacting patient care and staff morale. Let’s break it down. 🧵👇

Can't see your GP?
Read this from @TheBMA
GP practices have lost funding of £660million
Tories have made them ringfence money which can’t be allocated to hiring more GP😡
This is the purpose of cheaper non-doctors aka Physician Associates
A two tier NHS?
Yes
#ToriesOut
This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to kick the Tories into third place will only happen if enough people vote tactically to defeat their local Conservative. Such pragmatism could see dozens of ‘Portillo moments’ in the early hours of Friday morning 5/8

Show this to any single person who is even thinking of voting Tory.

Things that should be banned (part 3):
- Shaming people who go home on time
- Valuing quantity of work over quality
- Writing proposals for no good reason
- Collecting data that has no value
- Hierarchical status privileges
- By close of play today
- Printing everything out
🤷♀️
Things that should be banned (part 2):
- A pre meet right before the meeting
- A presentation you can’t even read
- People who ignore KEEP FREE in diary
- One off yearly appraisals
- The overuse of acronyms
- The phrase “deep dive”
- Long email trails
- Useless targets
We need to break the cycle of staff leaving #NHS. There are things out of our control but there are some things in our control
Do we look after them?
Meet their basic needs?
Develop them?
Be flexible?
Value them?
Give autonomy?
Create diverse roles?
Recruit fairly?
@NeedsAtWork
Signs of a leadership culture problem:
- status & grade are everything
- high staff turnover, especially staff who ask questions 🙋♀️
- bright people go quiet 🤐
- good ideas are claimed by seniors
- rule followers are the ones who stay
- leaders can’t see there’s a problem 🤷♂️
Back to back meetings don’t = increased productivity
⛔️ Stop creating culture that values it
⛔️ Block time with tasks you are doing
⛔️ Have shorter meetings
⛔️ Say no to meetings without purpose
⛔️ Ask can we talk another way
⛔️ Always put in your breaks
⛔️ Add when day ends
I don’t care about job titles, hierarchy, status and privileges in a leader.
I care about how honest you are, approachable, inclusive, how you own your mistakes, ask for help & cheer on your team 🧁
The Peter Principle is the satirical theory that employees are generally promoted to their level of incompetence.
In 1974, the author of the Peter a principle, Dr. Laurence J. Peter, explained how he first got the idea and what can be done about it
