One of the best pure hitters in baseball history.
Tony Gwynn’s .338 career batting average is the highest of any player whose career began after 1947 (min. 3,000 PA). The 15-time All-Star won 8 batting titles, 7 Silver Sluggers, and 5 Gold Glove Awards.
Gwynn played his entire 20-year career in San Diego, totaling 3,141 hits and 319 stolen bases. “Mr. Padre” led the club to their only two World Series appearances in 1984 and 1998. He batted .371 in two Fall Classics. A statue of Gwynn resides outside Petco Park in San Diego.
Gwynn was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2007. #BlackHistoryMonth
