Many Nigerian diabetics are suffering from severe insulin spikes due to the composition of “skimmed milk” products currently being sold in Nigeria. These products are loaded with maltodextrin (a corn or rice-based) chemical filler that has a glycemic index higher than pure sugar.

Nigerians are eating cheap starch-and-oil substitutes that would not legally qualify or be permitted to be labeled as milk under EU standards and NAFDAC is allowing it. And most Nigerians, especially at risk diabetics don’t even know.

Current NAFDAC regulations allow these ingredients to be disguised on nutritional labels as “general carbohydrates” instead of being explicitly declared as “added sugars”, which is the standard practice in the EU and other countries.

It’s time to ask @NafdacAgency to enforce warnings and transparent labeling, instead of asking Nigerians to read misleading labels.
