I think it is a mistake to view anything the US military does as being strictly, or even primarily, for military purposes or power projection, and forgetting that the US military is fundamentally a vehicle of business. Including the current deployment in the Middle East.

Most people do not realize that the overwhelming majority of US military weapons and equipment is actually expended in exercises, not in combat. It is a consumption machine. Buy, use, replace. Consume, consume, consume. Not to mention the Department of Defense is the world's largest consumer of oil.

Also, bear in mind that the GCC has been increasingly diversifying their procurement of weapons systems, decreasing their reliance on the Americans. Military deployments serve a marketing function, sometimes, more than a war function. To some degree, the deployment in the Gulf could actually be basically a defense sector expo.

For domestic political reasons, if you are pursuing an agenda that does not align with the neocons, the MIC, the nationalistic OCGFC, well, you do need to appease them to some degree. Which is why Mr. Slash-Government-Spending wants a $1 trillion defense budget. So, a big, dramatic deployment, and stoked fears of imminent war with Iran, or the Houthis, or whoever; serves as a good sales pitch for ramping up that budget.

I doubt you could find a seasoned, high-ranking US military officer, with decades of experience in the system, who actually believes that the core function of the American military is to fight anyone. The actual war part is the lesser factor in the military industrial complex. As Hamlet said "the readiness is all".
That is where the money is.
