#OTD in 1939, WW2 started. It led to almost total devastation of Polish culture, heritage and physical substance. In Europe, the cities were demolished and people killed by Germans or Soviets. Poland lost 18% of its prewar population. Nazi Germans and Soviet Russians caused too much pain and these wounds are still open for many European nations.

Yesterday in Kharkiv, Russians bombed a residential building killing 7, including the 18-yo artist Nika Kozhushko. I remember her well from a literary event in January. Here is the drawing she had with her. It depicted the recently bombed residential building. She was the future.

Is 60,000 hectares a lot? It's almost like five Parises. Imagine if you wiped an entire city off the map. Ukrainians don't need to imagine, because the russians have destroyed an area of forests equal to the area of five French capitals in the temporarily occupied territories!😤
In the Donetsk National Nature Park Holy Mountains, 80% of the forest there has burned down. In the Kharkiv region, about 40-45% of the forests are mined or damaged by fires.
As a result of the explosion of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant dam in June 2023, almost 55,000 hectares of forest were flooded in Kherson region.
russia has to be stopped! Stop ecocide Ukraine!
