South Africa has secured Chinese backing for a R2.2 trillion ($122 billion) energy investment programme aimed at expanding electricity supply and rebuilding its industrial base.

The plan targets 105GW of new generation capacity and 14,500km of transmission lines by 2039 as the country moves beyond years of crippling load shedding.
SA is also seeking Chinese companies to manufacture transformers, batteries, solar equipment, cables and other energy infrastructure locally. The strategy could reduce import dependence, create jobs and position South Africa as a major African hub for clean-energy manufacturing.
