Today, we learned that our dear Wallie has bone cancer. There are no good treatment options, and he's in a lot of pain. Wallie is the gentlest soul I have ever encountered. I have often remarked that he is in some sense too good for this world. It turns out I was right
@ianmhwalling@noturtlesoup17 I have a hard time visualizing faces (though I can create visual memories of photographs--it's very confusing). When I read a novel, for instance, I have no "vision" at all of what the characters look like, even if they've been described in detail
@erinrpineda This is awesome! Does it also work for other things? Can I now plan to imagine the academy in order to wield power over it? How about "the Occident"? For YM, Said thinks that we can all become gods! But I promise I will only use my power-wielding for good
APSA may have moved on but hotel workers in LA are still on strike and fighting for a decent contract - you can donate to their strike fund at https://t.co/xu4jWCPipo
@MattNoahSmith Almost exactly the same for me in Rochester, except that our public transit is so bad in my area that it makes using it nearly useless. So I'm gearing up for some winter commuting, I guess
Right. I've never been asked to to an external review either. I also only rarely get asked to do peer review (I almost always say yes!). While it is true that many academics are way over-burdened, those of us toiling in more obscure positions are often wholly ignored
@NomiClaireLazar I've never been asked to do an external review of a tenure file, though I've done loads of internal ones (i.e., ones internal to my institution). The issue, I think, is that no one's ever heard of me either.
