Retired sociologist; born and brought up in the Hebrides, spent my working life in England; after four years in Wales and four in China, now living in Scotland.
@CatHobbs Keir Starmer agreed (or said he did) when seeking the Labour leadership: “Public services should be in public hands, not making profits for shareholders. Support common ownership of… mail…” (No. 5 of his 10 Pledges “based on the moral case for socialism”)
@hugh_canning@operamagazine My happiest memory of Valerie Masterson is as Cleopatra opposite Janet Baker’s Julius Caesar in the ENO production of Handel’s opera.
@PiousArtist I’m not sure how far Henry James and Robert Louis Stevenson count as literary theorists, but they certainly wrote good fiction in their very different ways.
@JMcNallyBooks I particularly like the Signet editions of Shakespeare. They include Shakespeare’s source material, interesting and illuminating commentary, and footnotes properly at the foot of the page. And as my eyes get older, I appreciate more and more the solid, dark print of that era.
@znsh_osk I don’t know the Faure recording, but I’ve known and loved the Monteverdi on LP for many years. It was my introduction to Monteverdi - even though it is Boulanger who gets top billing!
@RichardBurgon@premnsikka “Public services should be in public hands, not making profits for shareholders.. End outsourcing our NHS….” (Keir Starmer: one of his 10 Pledges “based on the moral case for socialism” when he was seeking the Labour leadership)
@SaulStaniforth Keir Starmer promised more than Burnham when he was seeking the Labour leadership: “Public services should be in public hands, not making profits for shareholders. Support common ownership of rail, mail, energy and water; end outsourcing our NHS…”
@InspGadgetBlogs "To be or not to be" - the Ernst Lubitsch original, NOT the Mel Brooks remake. (The poster is in colour, but the film is black and white.)
