In 1988 Dolly Parton pulled every 7th and 8th grader in Sevier County into a room and told them to pick a buddy.
She made them sign a contract.. if BOTH graduate, she hands you both $500. One fails, nobody gets paid.
The county dropout rate went from 35% to 6%.
She handed out the checks herself.
In 1989 she offered $500 to every kid in the county who wanted to go to the local college.
When Gatlinburg burned in 2016, she sent 900 families $1,000 a month for six months.
You've probably heard that part.
Here's the part you haven't:
The fund raised more than expected, so she showed up in May and handed every one of those families another $5,000 on top.
Then she quietly put $3 million into the recovery group that handles the years after the news trucks leave.
She built her county an entire hospital.
She played a benefit concert in 2007, Dollywood and the Stampede matched it, and LeConte Medical Center opened in 2010 with a birthing unit and a women's center in it.
In 2022 she started covering 100% of tuition, books, and fees for Dollywood employees.
Full-time, part-time, AND seasonal.
In 1991 she paid for a bald eagle sanctuary because the birds couldn't be released back into the wild, no press release.
And when Hurricane Helene came through here in Western North Carolina, she wrote a personal check for $1 million and her companies matched it.
She didn't owe North Carolina anything, but she helped us anyway.
She started the Imagination Library because her daddy couldn't read or write. Before he passed, he told her it was the most important thing she ever did.
Rest in Peace, Dolly 🇺🇸
Michelle and I are heartbroken by the tragic passing of Rob Reiner and his beloved wife, Michele. Rob’s achievements in film and television gave us some of our most cherished stories on screen. But beneath all of the stories he produced was a deep belief in the goodness of people—and a lifelong commitment to putting that belief into action. Together, he and his wife lived lives defined by purpose. They will be remembered for the values they championed and the countless people they inspired. We send our deepest condolences to all who loved them.

Story time. Seven years ago I left a ring on a cold counter, packed everything I could fit into my tiny Fiat, kissed my dog goodbye and left a penthouse apartment and loveless life behind to move into a cheap room in a sketchy neighborhood with three strangers I found on Craigslist. I decided I’d rather leave “everything” behind than be called trailer trash or made to feel like someone’s possession.
Within a few months, I found my own cute little place by the water, got my dog back, reconnected with friends, started volunteering, quit a passionless job and began a career I loved. That fall, I met my high school sweetheart @derouin_eric again. We were broke and stressed but made things work. By 29, I bought my first house. By 30, I created @UnsolvedRI and won a Forty Under 40 award. Last year, I got my mom’s cold case reopened. Two weeks ago, we adopted our third dog and I testified at the State House for a statewide cold case unit. Last weekend, I had brunch with friends who’ve become like sisters. Yesterday, I had a call about one of the biggest projects of my life.
I spent years believing it was fine living a safe, boring life and following someone else’s expectations of who and what I should be — it took me a long time to find my own voice. There were a lot of bad days and lonely nights. But I saw a flash of something different the second I put the ring down, the one that felt more like a shackle than a symbol of love. I saw this woman who was strong, healthy, confident and brave, who helped others and lived this amazing life where she truly felt happy and fulfilled. I didn’t feel like her, but I wanted to be her. Thinking back on that moment today, I’m so grateful for all the tough times that led me to her.
I don’t know who needs to hear this today, but you have the power within you to be whatever version of yourself makes your soul sing. That person is worth every risk, setback and heartache along the way. Forget who you’re told to be and be yourself. All you have to do is just take the first step forward.
Take it from a girl whose first home was a trailer with no electricity or plumbing — you’ve got this. 💜

In 2020, at the end of his final year at Pitt, Damar Hamlin organized a toy drive for kids in his hometown of McKees Rocks, Pa. This is the young man who went down on the field tonight in Cincinnati. He is a man; not a number on a jersey. Prayers for Damar.
