The most interesting thing about the audio clip is the reverence with which they are speaking about these grandmothers. If I were to disagree in a worldview sense, it would be to call the grandmother role in child-rearing an great opportunity and a role worthy of respect, but not the sole and singular purpose of the existence of grandmothers as humans.

Evolutionary Biology and Evolutionary Psychology are fascinating, but the problem is that it treats reproduction as our primary purpose as humans, whereas I see EvoPsych/EvoBio as a necessary enabling mechanism that serves our true purpose, that being consciousness, experience, and the journey of the soul.

You say the Christian view of purpose is not really in conflict with the EvoBio position, but in the sense that Eric framed reproductive support as “THE purpose” of a person, I think it would absolutely put it in conflict with any worldview with a concept of soul. It’s an ends vs means thing. You can’t say that reproduction is the ends and grandmothers are a means and then say that isn’t in conflict with a worldview wherein the ends have to do with soul and reproduction itself is a means to that end.

All that said, I think both Eric and JD had very positive and respectful intentions with this line of conversation.

A question for @rorysutherland - I very much enjoyed your recent interview with @CosmicSkeptic . In it, you made a few points that i found to be in tension with each other, or at least begging further elucidation. You said that when you take identity out of it, the most important politics is local politics, but later you recommend nomadism, which effectively alienates a person from participating in a local community over the long term, disempowering them both politically and socially, and incentivizing short-term transactional economic and personal relationships. Nomadism also does not solve the problem of the inaccessibility of environments conducive to family formation. I agree that true Georgism would be a preferable solution, but given that it’s adoption is unlikely, how would you reconcile nomadism with the importance of community embeddedness, civic engagement, long term relationships, and family formation?
