Every year, viral social media posts tell us to bleach pumpkins to preserve them. And every year, I post: please don't do that.
Pumpkins are food. Wild animals will nibble a jack-o'-lantern, so bleach, paint and plastic decorations turn a pumpkin into contaminated food. Wildlife agencies recommend keeping pumpkins free of chemical preservatives.
You can preserve your pumpkins longer by keeping them cool and bringing them inside between displays. It's also reasonable to accept that pumpkins are perishable and they will rot over time. As they should.
When your jack-o-lantern is done, remove candles, wax and decorations. Compost an untreated pumpkin or use an approved municipal drop-off.
Don't dump piles of pumpkins in parks or preserves; even organic waste is litter when it concentrates food, spreads non-native seeds and attracts animals to roads and people.
Painted or treated pumpkins belong in the trash unless local guidance says otherwise.

I’m grateful to President @BarackObama for his support. I hear it in every county I visit: costs keep going up, families are worried about their healthcare and their hospitals, and folks feel like Washington stopped listening a long time ago.
We're going to change that on November 3rd when we show the country Mississippi Matters.
Mississippi farmers are the backbone of our communities and our economy.
This National Farmers Day, I'm grateful for the hardworking men and women who feed our families and help our state and nation thrive. Mississippi Farmers Matter! 🚜
Today, we honor the history, cultures and contributions of Indigenous peoples, including the Choctaw, Chickasaw and other Tribal Nations whose roots run deep in Mississippi.
On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we recognize their enduring legacy and reaffirm our commitment to honoring their heritage, protecting their rights and building a future where every community can thrive. #MississippiMatters
Mississippi is long overdue for a senator with the courage to take on Washington’s corruption, fight for our hospitals and bring good jobs back home.
I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and get to work. On November 3rd, let’s take Mississippi in a new direction.

Dolly Parton believed in giving back and helping children dream bigger—and this year, we’re celebrating that spirit through Give Like Dolly Day.
On September 25, we’re inviting communities all over the world to join us in giving back to children by supporting your local Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library program. Your support helps make it possible for the children in your community to receive a free, high-quality book every month from birth to age 5.

I need your help with something, even if it’s just a retweet:
I’m working on a story about the evolution of video games and the KEY to my story is a guy named Oscar Munoz who worked for Sega’s customer service dept in the early 1990s.
I’ve tried everything to find him and this is my last resort.
