Last week's sad news.
Some people fight wars with rifles. Others fight them with their hands, their skill, and their determination to save lives.

Surgeon Captain #RickJolly OBE was one of those rare men.

During the 1982 #FalklandsWar, Rick Jolly served as Senior Medical Officer of 3 Commando Brigade. While battles raged across the islands, he focused on a different mission — bringing the wounded home alive.

At Ajax Bay, he established the legendary field hospital known as the “Red and Green Life Machine."” Over the course of the conflict, his team treated nearly 1,000 casualties, including both British and Argentine soldiers. Every British serviceman who reached his hospital alive survived.

His courage extended far beyond the operating table.

When HMS Ardent was struck and sailors were left struggling in the freezing South Atlantic, Rick volunteered to be lowered from a helicopter into the icy water. Without hesitation, he helped rescue two sailors who were moments from death. Asked later what was going through his mind, his answer was simple:

“If I don’t act now, this man will die.”

That sentence captured the man perfectly.

For his extraordinary service, Rick Jolly became the only British serviceman honoured by both the United Kingdom and Argentina for his actions during the Falklands conflict. He received an OBE from Britain and the Order of May from Argentina — recognition earned not through taking lives but through saving them.

Rick Jolly passed away in 2018 at the age of 71.

His legacy is not measured in battles won, but in the hundreds of lives he gave a second chance. In a war remembered for sacrifice and loss, he became a symbol of humanity, compassion, and duty.

Rest easy, Doctor.

You saved friend and foe alike, and in doing so showed the very best of what a soldier — and a human being — can be. 🇫🇰 👑 🇬🇧
