@Erika_TVICOMS @DeidreGilley A lot of the times, in movies for example, if there is an interaction between two people, one having a disability, they will emphasize that they can have sex - just reiterates the perception society has.
@DeidreGilley A5: we use person first language because they are not their disabilities, they are humans first or foremost. With being a human comes compassion, feelings, and love. It just becomes a matter of expressing it. I think they have the actual ability to maintain and develop -
@DeidreGilley relationships, but they have to put forth the effort and dedication... to then perceived ability is considered and they must show society that they do have the actual ability to maintain and develop romantic relationships. #TransitionTalk
@EthanBr61384117@DeidreGilley mail in voting and community transportation - so important!!! Going somewhere to vote can be super overstimulating with all the people and if going to somewhere to vote is an option then transportation needs to be available!! #TransitionTalk
@DeidreGilley A4: It is important to include our students in current politics, because it ultimately affects their life. They should be informed on how to vote and why vote. Most importantly, they should be taught their human rights. #TransitionTalk
@DeidreGilley A3: Every individual experiences things differently bc of their unique attributes. I would say each of the students in the film had a different experience due to all of those factors. They had different family dynamics & resources too which made an influence on their experience
@lindsayjonesfsu @DeidreGilley I've said it before and I'll say it a million times again - society sits here trying to change people with disabilities when it is really society that needs to change
@DeidreGilley A2: When I think of IQ testing, the first thing I think of is how it defines their limitations and lacks to emphasize their abilities and strengths. I have a hard time thinking otherwise. I know IQ scores help in diagnosing ID which then leads to the individual receiving
@DeidreGilley A1: does it surprise me? Unfortunately, no. IQ tests are used so frequently as a measurement of someone's capability, which is so frustrating. I myself am having a difficult time constructing a lesson on enlisting in the military bc of this view on IQ testing. #TransitionTalk
@DeidreGilley My name is Maddy, I am a graduate student in FSU's special education program and I am currently in Tallahassee. #TransitionTalk Heres how I feel about that statistic:
@rebekahlynnfsu@DeidreGilley even for me, coming to college I was overwhelmed by the fact I had to pick one major that was going to pave my future because not enough people in my school experience helped me explore all the options life had to offer
@DeidreGilley A4: take the time to ask questions and understand the individual, what does the individual prefer/not prefer. Encourage positivity among employees #transitiontalk
@DeidreGilley A2: lack of resources and lack of awareness for both parties - some jobs just need to be taught how to accommodate employees with disabilities and how to make it an appropriate environment #transitiontalk
@DeidreGilley Q1: angry. I know people that refuse to work at jobs that pay less than $10/hr, meanwhile there are people being paid literal cents/hr. You never really consider how being paid minimum wage can be a privilege
