The headline is misleading. FG isn’t scrapping JSS or SSS entirely.

Education Minister Tunji Alausa announced today they’ll phase out the “disarticulation policy” forcing JSS and SSS to run as completely separate schools (different principals, facilities, etc.).

Why: 20+ million pupils drop out before SSS due to too few JSS spots (80k primary schools vs ~15k JSS), overcrowding, and poor transition—especially in northern states. Many SSS facilities sit underused.

Goal: Remove barriers, improve flow from JSS to SSS, better use resources, and cut dropouts/out-of-school numbers. The proposal goes to the next National Council on Education meeting.

It’s reform to fix a broken transition system, not abolition of secondary education.
