I AM A MAN. I AM A FATHER. AND I AM SCARED.

A sixth woman’s body has reportedly been found in KwaThema, Springs, following the discovery of a fifth woman near Olifantsfontein and several other women found dead in and around Kempton Park.

Police are investigating and have established a multidisciplinary task team to determine whether the cases are connected.

But one thing is already clear:

Women are dying. Families are being destroyed. Women are afraid.

Police have confirmed that most of the victims in the Kempton Park cases had been sexually assaulted.

As a man, I am angry.

As a father, I am scared.

I have a daughter. She is only one year and nine months old. I look at her and ask myself: What kind of South Africa will she inherit?

Will she be able to run without fear? Walk home without fear? Travel without fear? Trust the men around her?

Then I think about Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo, who went out for a run and never came home. Her eight-year-old daughter was the one who raised the alarm.

Imagine being that child, waiting for your mother to come home.

That is not a statistic. That is a child's life changed forever.

And now another woman is gone.

Six women. Six lives. Six families carrying unimaginable pain.

So I am speaking directly to the men of South Africa:

WE HAVE TO STAND UP.

Not only when a woman's death becomes a headline. Not only when social media is outraged.

We must speak when our friends make degrading comments about women. We must challenge men who abuse women. We must stop protecting perpetrators because they are our friends, brothers or relatives.

Silence is not brotherhood. Protecting perpetrators is not brotherhood.

There is nothing masculine about rape. Nothing powerful about violence. Nothing honourable about killing a woman.

A real man does not destroy a woman to prove he is a man.

This is bigger than Ekurhuleni. Bigger than Kempton Park. Bigger than KwaThema.

THIS IS A SOUTH AFRICAN CRISIS.

I am Mayibuye Melisizwe Mandela. Today I speak not as a politician, but as a father.

I want my daughter to grow up in a country where she can run, walk, dream and live without fear.

I want to be able to tell her one day:

“My generation saw what was happening to women, and we did not remain silent.”

Today I am angry. Today I am heartbroken. Today I am scared.

Because I am a man. I am a father. And I am scared for my daughter.

Men, look at your daughters. Look at your mothers. Look at your sisters.

Then ask yourself:

WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO MAKE SOUTH AFRICA SAFER FOR THEM?

Our daughters are watching.

We cannot fail them.
