Teachers have been saying this for a century now. If a child is not up to grade level in English or math by third grade, or around age 9, it’s next to impossible for them to ever be on grade level.

Back when I was growing up with four brothers and a single mother, we didn't get fully loaded EBT cards to spend on whatever we wanted. Here's what my mother picked up each month to help us survive: • a block of processed cheese (what some called ‘government cheese’)
• a large can of peanut butter
• a can of luncheon meat or canned meat
• powdered or evaporated milk
• a bag of flour
• a bag of rice or grain
• lard or cooking fat
• butter or surplus butter
• canned vegetables or fruits
• dry beans or legumes

I’m sure many from my generation have vivid memories of being on welfare assistance. The government gave us what we needed to survive, but there were definitely no bells or whistles. Let’s get back to that!
