Earlier today, the @UNBSug hosted a technical workshop with @lgrb_uganda on the Global Standards Approach, as guided by the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Agreement.

The session introduced the National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board to the key requirements for developing and implementing technical regulations in the gaming sector, an important step toward strengthening integrity, operator compliance and consumer protection in Uganda.

“The standards are in place to ensure fairness to players, while also guaranteeing that gaming equipment is safe, reliable, and fit for purpose,” said Andrew Othieno, Manager Standards at Uganda National Bureau of Standards.

The National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board remains dedicated to adopting global best practices that promote transparency, public confidence, and a well-regulated gaming industry.

The meeting focused on joint efforts to enhance compliance among gaming operators, including coordinated field inspections and strengthened oversight to ensure adherence to regulatory and tax obligations.

The engagement reflects a shared commitment to transparency, accountability, and a fair operating environment, while ensuring the sector contributes meaningfully to national development.

The Board Chairman, @KitarikoKen, yesterday led a team of Board Members and top management into a fruitful discussion with @URA_CG Mr. John Rujoki Musinguzi and his team.

"Collaboration is not optional, it fundamental. We cannot regulate what we cannot see, and we cannot collect what we cannot verify." said the Board Chairman Mr. Kenneth Kitariko during @lgrb_uganda Board of Directors' visit to @URAuganda.

The visit sparked discussions around operator compliance, tax obligations, enforcement efforts, National Central Electronic Monitoring System integration, and other key issues.

While addressing members, @URA_CG Mr. John Rujoki Musinguzi commended the gaming Board for the great work of regulating the sector. He said the gaming industry is among the fastest growing sectors and therefore both agencies need to strengthen collaboration and improve systems to foster compliance, enforcement and fulfil their mandates.

The success will be measured by stronger player protection initiatives and revenue performance.

@EmunaLovel (Immaculate Amony) journalist with @ugandarn in the Lango sub-region, said the engagement had empowered journalists with the knowledge needed to report more accurately on gaming-related issues. She noted that the session helped media practitioners understand how to draft informed stories on gaming and where to access credible information for their reporting.

Amony thanked the Board for organizing the timely engagement, and appealed to the Board to consider organizing periodic media engagements in different sub-regions so that more journalists can benefit from similar interactions and explore the positive contributions of the gaming industry.

She further encouraged fellow journalists to utilise the Board’s wbsite and regional office in Gulu whenever they need clarification or information while covering gaming matters.

Through collaboration with journalists and media houses, the Board aims to ensure accurate information reaches the public, support prevention efforts, and encourage a balanced gaming environment that protects the public.

Through a partnership between SiGMA Africa and the Gaming Regulators Africa Forum (GRAF), regulatory leaders presented a high-level overview of their countries’ regulatory frameworks under the theme “From Discussion to Direction: Advancing Harmonised Licensing, Responsible Gambling and Technology-Enabled Solutions in Africa."

This engagement was intended not only to strengthen collaboration among regulators, but also to enhance regulatory clarity and predictability for licence holders operating across multiple jurisdictions, while reinforcing safeguards to protect punters and combat illegal gaming activities across the continent.

One of the key takeaways was that establishing harmonised licensing standards and a continent-wide reporting mechanism could help address the trend of operators gravitating toward jurisdictions with easier licensing processes.
