A cool piece by Toyotarou that doesn’t get passed around enough imo - wonder how he’d approach it if he had to do it again now, after all this time at the sharp end of DBS 🤔
@CanalBudokai@Mano_Jota45 Highly likely! The daughters from the village who Oolong kidnapped had the same basic naming conventions: Lee, Hejj and Hog. Lee, for example, was named after the M3 Lee battle tank. “Hedgehog” was probably because of the Matilda Hedgehog battle tank.
@mussi3x The Galactic Patrol members are generally named after seafood.
Many of the other characters who show up in this arc (though not all) also have names based on things related to Tochigi Prefecture, from which Toyotarou comes.
@Demeros27@SaladSaiyan Hachette commissioned the work originally, and they’re a French publisher.
That said, I don’t mean to imply the other versions have a dependency on the French (I accept there’s a Japanese ur-text) but I think in these discussions having as many versions as possible is preferable
@SaladSaiyan You’re welcome. For those who may be interested, the French version is freely (and apparently quite legitimately) available here:

Regarding this topic, it's interesting that Toriyama had previously stated that he originally designed the structure around Freeza's torso as a part of his body, but eventually changed his mind and made it an armor (as he depicted in the scene where it breaks)
@beyon3r@Its_Tamim@icantthinkuvat@Passi0n03 It doesn’t have a clear subject like ‘they’ or ‘we’ supplied by the text; Goku just says “dakara horobita…” which means “That’s why [who we’re talking about, in this case the Saiya-jin] perished/went extinct”. Either translation is possible, but best not read too much into it.
“I guess as a basic principle, you have to draw them to look cute, but I haven’t actually drawn many female characters in my career…I hate to say it, but female characters are not my strong suit.” (Toyotarou, WDBN 06 Dec 2021)

Studying Toyotaro's art you really start to notice that he draws male characters with a lot of lust
Meanwhile female characters look very plain all the time
The Dragon Ball Super: Super Broly Blu-ray booklet has been scanned in 4K quality and is now available on my Patreon — completely free to view.

I’d really appreciate it if you could share this post. And thank you so much to everyone who supports me on Patreon — I’ll be posting plenty of Dragon Ball and other anime content there
@GalacticMj I think the implication here is that it was just a programming failure, rather than an unintended consequence of character nuance for Gero per se. It’s simply hard to scratch-cook a killer Bot just the way you want it.
@antarou_db I know a wiki is by definition an eternal ‘work in progress’, but I must confess I’m surprised. Toyotarou has given out enough information over the years that I would’ve expected this article to be rather fuller than it is.
