In 2022, I found myself back on an offshore platform in the Gulf of Guinea, this time wearing the hat of the petroleum engineer for the asset. This also was my last time offshore as an operations personnel. The operation was a statutory shutdown, a mandatory regulatory requirement. We were scheduled to be on the platform for two weeks, with the shutdown itself planned for five to six days, after which we would monitor production recovery before pulling out.
At the outset, a regulator was assigned to the project. He intended to stay only a few days, which I knew won't be possible because who would send a whole chopper out for him considering the cost? We had our usual disagreements over this, but ultimately, I accepted his presence, reasoning that he at least needed to observe the operations. Let us just be there, I said in my mind๐.
The shutdown began. Our plan relied heavily on a standby diesel-powered generator to supply power to the entire facility while the wells that provide gas to the Gas generators are off and maintenance/repairs were undertaken, including fixing damaged pipelines.
Unfortunately, the generator failed. The backup generator also refused to start, and the contractor responsible for bringing an additional generator as part of his ancillaries didn't bring it, for some unacceptable reasons. The platform was plunged into total darkness in the middle of nowhere๐ฉ.
Without power, even basic survival became arduous. The kitchen could not function, leaving us unable to get food. Meals had to be improvised using foods that required no cooking, like Garri. By nightfall, the living quarters, small cubicles, became stiflingly hot, forcing personnel onto the helideck to find respite, all while adhering to strict HSE guidelines.
By the second day, communication challenges compounded the crisis. The internet was down, and our Thuraya satellite phone, already limited in credit, became our only link. Even that required coordination with the nearby security boat, signalling them to approach so we could transmit urgent messages to the office. Our families, naturally, were anxious, with no way to reach us.
Despite these setbacks, ingenuity prevailed. Talented engineers on the platform worked tirelessly, restoring power & ensuring the statutory maintenance was completed. Production resumed smoothly, and by the end of the assignment, everyone had returned safely, laughter and relief replacing earlier frustration.
This experience reinforced several critical lessons:
1. Redundancy Planning is Non-Negotiable: Always ensure multiple, tested layers of backup systems. One failed generator or missing contractor should never cripple operations.
2. Communication Contingencies are Essential: Satellite phones, backup credit, and procedural coordination with nearby vessels or teams are vital for crisis communication.
3. Human Factors Matter: Extreme conditions; heat, darkness, hunger, impact morale and performance. Contingency plans must account for crew well-being.
4. Flexibility and Ingenuity Save Operations: Technical skill and adaptive problem-solving can overcome unforeseen crises.
5. Early Alignment with Stakeholders Prevents Friction: Clear expectations with regulators or contractors at the outset mitigate conflict and streamline operations.
In retrospect, the blackout and communication failures were stressful, but they tested our resilience, teamwork, and creativity. It was a reminder that, in offshore operations, preparedness is as critical as technical competence.

Today we visited a factory (STELATO), showroom, and headquarters of BAIC INTERNATIONAL, one of China's biggest manufacturers of electric vehicles (EV).
Established in 1958, in partnership with Mercedes Benz, it has over 10 factories in China, 29 globally, and spread selling centres in over 140 countries.
Although the company has a showroom in Abuja, it discussed the possibility of establishing a factory in Nigeria. We also discussed the possibility of establishing a battery processing factory to leverage on the huge deposits of lithium in Nigeria.
With this there will be skills acquisition and employment for our youth, transfer of technology, and Nigeria will a regional hub for the manufacture of EV vehicles in West Africa.

Moral: we should stop profiling tribes as criminals, but criminals should be treated as one.
In every society there are criminals, blaming an ethnic group gives main criminals leverage of escaping and conducting successful attacks while diverting the public attention.
