Final taught fieldwork day for Geog & Env students in Sicily! Students taking quantitative measurements (particulate matter in air + ambient noise levels) & qualitative observations (hygiene hazards, visible waste management strategies etc) to scope environmental challenges ♻️
BSc Geography & Environment students have been investigating water quality along Sicily's coast 🌊
After instruction in GEL bag testing & AquaRead probes from Dr Magda Grove, they could determine if sites could be awarded a Blue Flag eco-label for environmental performance 💙
Ngl it was WET in Sicily today 🌧️🌧️ Fieldwork = being ready for all weather!
Still managed to see hilltop Taormina's famous vistas, & to study how 'tourist gaze' & desire for the picturesque has changed the town 🏞️
Hot Sicilian coffee (+ hot chocolate) saw us through ☕
Human Geographers in Catania today! We're investigating the role of food (production + consumption) in creating a distinct 'Sicilian' identity, plus its importance for tourist experiences and economies 🍝
A new episode of Strombolian activity occurred on 24 March 2025 at the Southeast Crater of #Etna. It started on the morning, culminated around noon and then diminished; some explosive activity was still going on at nightfall. Seen from Nicolosi, on the south flank of the volcano
First day of our Geography / Environment field trip to Sicily! 💛♥️ Thanks to expert vulcanologist @etnaboris for showing us around. Got to hear about Etna's distinct geological profile, and why volcanoes aren't just hazards but also lifegivers for local environments.
Etna's hardened lava rock is incredibly hard (check out @etnaboris hammering away at it) and pretty inhospitable to life. But on Etna we can also find black volcanic sand that's very rich in minerals and a superb fertiliser 🌱
Coming up on Feb 5th, our lecturer @LornaLinch will be at the Bevendean Community Pub for their award-winning Brains At The Bevy programme. Hear about her research at glaciers & ice sheets - and why climate change will force us to pay attention to them!

Outdoor first aid course with @MaureenBerg11 tackling the defibrillator and someone who had fallen from a tree with a splintered femur 😳 @uniofbrighton@BrightonUniGeo
Day 2 of our outdoor first aid course, where we have to deal with “real life” scenarios including cardiac arrest, stroke, falling from height, hypothermia, diabetes, seizures, burns … and the absolute corker - the severed hand (all acting) 🫣 @uniofbrighton@BrightonUniGeo
Second staff/student social of the year for our #Geography, #Ecology & #Environment courses!
Yesterday evening we were down at the beautiful Royal Pavilion at the heart of Brighton - which becomes an incredible outdoor ice skating rink every winter ❄⛸
Capping off #GeographyAwarenessWeek 2024, it was lovely seeing all our Geography, Ecology and Environment staff and students at our social at the SU tonight! 🌍🦆🌱
Meanwhile our 1st year Geography and Environment students are on a one-week field trip to Pembrokeshire in Wales - today groups are sampling water quality in the Solva river 🧪🌊
More from our 1 week Pembrokeshire field trip - groups of Geography and Environment students now over to West Dale beach to sample for microplastic pollution ⛱️
Welcome to all our new 1st year Geography and Environment undergrad students, plus our Town Planning masters students!
A gentle first day in Brighton, learning about the history and development of the city 🌞
First field trip for our new Geography & Environment students! Over to the beautiful Cuckmere Haven, featuring:
- chalk cliffs (the famous Seven Sisters)
- oxbow lakes
- a small parrot (actually companion to one of the landscape workers, not a haven resident!)
Goodbye Taormina and Sicily! Our annual international field trip is finished, well done everyone! 🎉 #Geography & #Environment students off for the Easter break, then writing their fieldwork reports on return to Brighton.
