It is more of a question of how to improve current strategies for licensing, rehabilitation, monitoring and sanctioning. This is what we are planning to look more into together with colleagues from @UBBotswana and @biustbw.

Learning so much about how local communities are affected by illicit #SandMining in #Botswana 🇧🇼. Heard many heartbreaking stories on the different socio-environmental issues they are facing and how all they want is the right to protect their precious resource.🧵

We also heard of increases in cases of #malaria 🦟 and #cholera from stagnant pits of water, and of the loss of riparian vegetation🌳 and bird species🐦 that relied on it. Beaurocracy and ineffective monitoring & sanctioning stand in the way of improving the situation.

Legal operations also cause problems, as in most cases the #mining sites remain unrehabilitated and unprotected, becoming dumping grounds. In all places we visited there were cases of children🏃‍♀️ and livestock 🐐 getting injured or dying in them.
