“Never Gonna Give You Up” is the debut single from Rick Astley’s 1987 album Whenever You Need Somebody. Produced by the legendary Stock Aitken Waterman (SAW), the infectious dance-pop track became a massive global phenomenon, reaching #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart, and topping the charts in 25 countries. Astley’s rich, deep baritone voice surprised the world, making him an overnight sensation.

Astley was originally working as a "tea boy" in the SAW studios when producers discovered his incredible singing voice. When the song first hit the radio, listeners assumed the deep, soulful voice belonged to an older Black American singer, only to be shocked when the music video revealed a skinny, 21-year-old redhead. Two decades later, the track achieved immortality when it became the centerpiece of the "Rickroll," the internet's most famous bait-and-switch meme. The phenomenon was so culturally significant that Astley himself Rickrolled millions of Americans during a surprise live performance at the 2008 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
