For centuries, the Romani people have endured slavery, persecution, forced assimilation, genocide and displacement. Empires have tried to control us, governments have tried to silence us and entire societies have tried to erase us.
And yet, we are still here.
Our language is more than a means of communication. It carries the memories of our ancestors, the wisdom of our elders, the stories of our families and the history of a people who refused to disappear.
Every word spoken in Romani is a connection to those who came before us. Every child who learns our language carries that inheritance into the future.
Language is culture. Language is identity. And for a people who have spent centuries fighting to preserve both, language is resistance.
We are scattered across continents, divided by borders and speaking many dialects, but our shared linguistic heritage reminds us that we are part of something greater than the nations in which we live.
To preserve our language is to preserve our right to tell our own stories, define our own identities and determine our own future.
We do not need permission to exist. We do not need permission to remember. And we will not apologise for refusing to be forgotten.
Our ancestors kept our language alive through centuries of oppression. The least we can do is make sure our descendants inherit it.
Amari Romani čhib si purani vi šukar. E Romani čhib si e Rromengi zor. Na bister ki čhib!
AMARI ČHIB, AMARI ZOR!
OPRE ROMA!
Well, I'll be damned. A blue wave across America, and TEXAS of all places turning blue. Never thought I'd see that in my lifetime.
And you know what? Celebrate it, America. You've earned that much.
But before everyone packs up their protest signs and declares the revolution complete, let's get something straight.
You've changed the people running the government. You haven't changed the people who OWN the government.
The AI billionaires are still there. The corporate lobbyists are still there. AIPAC is still there. The obscenely wealthy parasites who pour millions into political campaigns to ensure their interests are protected haven't suddenly developed a conscience because the electoral map changed colour.
They'll simply start writing cheques to a different set of politicians.
And THAT'S what worries me.
How many Americans are going to look at these results, say "Right, job done," and go straight back to sleep while the same old machinery of exploitation continues grinding away?
Because voting is the BEGINNING of political participation, not the end of it.
Organise. Unionise. Build mutual aid networks. Hold your representatives accountable. Demand transparency. And when the Democrats inevitably do something that deserves condemnation, CONDEMN THEM.
Don't make excuses for behaviour you'd have been screaming bloody murder about if a Republican had done it.
The measure of political integrity isn't how loudly you oppose the people you despise, it's whether you're prepared to hold the people you SUPPORT to the same standards.
The American people have demonstrated that they can change their government - now comes the considerably harder task of changing the system that government serves.
The election is over, America. Your responsibility isn't.
In an era where no one was sure whether Star Trek HAD a future, your warmth and your sturdiness gave us hope. For seven years, you were the Captain of the Enterprise, and you held yourself with that dignity in all walks of life. A knight in the truest sense of the word, and a man who will never be forgotten. Rest in Peace, Sir Patrick Strewart.
Walter Koenig, who played exuberant Russian navigator Pavel Chekov on the original “Star Trek” series and many of the franchise’s ensuing films, has died at the age of 90. https://t.co/mnh3dy794K
