I often hear people pitying us for being in such a difficult industry. Shipping is a tough, conservative industry - can you really make money there?!
Shipping industry generates $500 billion+ in revenues, if we add fuel, port & terminal dues and services the total industry size is closer to $1 trillion. To put that in perspective - there are only 19 countries in the world with $1 trillion+ GDP.
There is so much to do, we sometimes get too excited to sleep. I tell people, if we do a good job - there are definitely people who can pay us, do not worry 😀

Shipping is a trillion dollar industry. Ranking shipping as a country in global GDP list would put it in the top 20.
Seaside transportation cost is about 7% of the value of goods transported, or $81 per ton (& 80kg GHG per ton).

People rolled their eyes, when I told them I am leaving finance to start shipping tech company.
Shipping is anything but boring. Most of what we use daily arrives by ship. It's the engine of the global economy.
At @MagicPortCALL we are excited how intelligence and automation will transform this industry and the world that depends on it. Take a look 👉 https://t.co/ZdgB3vyjtM
Can planned US levy on China-linked ships cause up to 1% inflation? 👇
👉 In @MagicPortCALL database, I can see 37,000+ US port visits from foreign countries
👉 95%+ are ships made outside of the US
👉 around 30% are ships made in China
👉 if you want to charge each China made ship visit $1.5 million that's $15 billion+
👉 the extended levy proposal, charging any owner who has Chinese made vessel in fleet, will quickly take that to $30billion+ fee
👉 my guess is all shipping companies together make about US$100billion in earnings
👉 $30billion+ is a significant cut into shipping earnings, they will pass it to end customers
👉 value of US imports is about $3 trillion, so if everything was to flow through 100% to end customer, that's 1% inflation.
This is quick, back of the envelope calculation, would like to hear thoughts.
Attacks in the Red Sea remind people of shipping! Piling complex emissions regulations with questionable outcomes by @IMOHQ & @EU_Commission is making life harder for shipping & puts the majority, smaller operators around the world at disadvantage. #RedSeaAttacks#shipping
