@ISCRAES Good scope for a symposium like this. I'd love to see more submissions from arid-region research. The lessons we're learning from water-limited farming apply far beyond where they were developed.
@MikeAgrow Strong answer. An ageing smallholder base is solvable, but only if young people see a future in it. Controlled-environment farms in the Emirates run on real data and are staffed by engineers who'd never have looked at farming twice.
@FactorThisMedia We plan desalination load, hydrogen production, and data centre cooling against the same grid in Abu Dhabi. Coupled planning depends on exactly this granular utilization data. California publishing it is a real step.
Peak passage week on the farms. Harriers, bee-eaters and wheatears moving through at first light. I'm finding most of the birds on plots where we keep the margins wild and chemical use low. What we leave alone in one field shows up in the counts along the whole flyway.
Good initiative. Desalination is an energy problem, food production is a water problem, and portfolios that treat them separately keep underperforming. Investment only flows when needs become bankable pipelines. Dubai is the right room.
Ahead of the UN Water Conference, @orfmiddleeast is convening a closed-door roundtable to discuss key takeaways from ORF ME’s ‘Policy Pathways for Food and Water Security in the MENA Region’ compendium.
The discussion will explore pathways to build more resilient food and water systems, assess the food-water-energy nexus, and identify opportunities to strengthen regional cooperation, investment, innovation, and #governance across the #MENA region.

Good overview. The financing focus is the real story: over 90% of global water investment is still public money. I don't see that ratio closing a $6.7 trillion gap. UAE and Senegal co-hosting puts capital re-engineering at the center.
The 2026 UN Water Conference (officially the 2026 United Nations Water Conference) is a major global summit co-hosted by the governments of Senegal and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Key Overview & Objectives
Co-Hosts: Senegal and the United Arab Emirates.
Core Mission: To accelerate global progress on Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6)—ensuring access to clean water and sanitation for all by 2030—and to follow up on the commitments made during the landmark 2023 UN Water Conference in New York.
Focus Areas:
Water Security & Climate Resilience: Addressing severe drought, desertification, and climate-induced water stress across regions like Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East.
Transboundary Cooperation: Managing shared river basins, aquifers, and regional water resources to prevent geopolitical conflicts over water rights.
Financing & Innovation: Mobilizing private and public capital for water infrastructure, desalination, wastewater recycling, and digital water management solutions.
Significance
Following the 2023 conference—which was the first formal UN conference dedicated solely to water in nearly 50 years—the 2026 conference serves as a critical midpoint assessment ahead of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goal deadline, pushing countries to translate voluntary "Water Action Agenda" pledges into legally binding actions and funded infrastructure projects.

Construction is the fast part. Interconnection queues and permitting add years in the US. Abu Dhabi clears utility-scale solar and storage in under two years because the permitting layer is thin. EWEC and TAQA already have multi-GW battery procurement live.
@MBRSpaceCentre@DIFC@DubaiAIFest Geospatial data is quietly becoming the backbone of water and farm management in this region. I find each cohort of this pipeline more encouraging than the last. Good to watch it grow out of Dubai.
@CgiarFarming Bringing data together across sources, for me. Field observations, soil tests, and yield records all sit in separate systems, and the format differences alone eat days.
Growing communities need reliable power and water infrastructure.

@isolaralliance The smart farming demo in the photos caught my eye. Agrivoltaics tested in hot, dusty conditions is exactly what arid regions need more of.
@mbzwi Strong finalist. Egypt's saline soils are one of the hardest test beds anywhere. Solutions that perform there will travel well across the region. I'll be following how Agri-Vit develops.
A reminder that restoration works even where nothing should grow. Mangrove planting here in the Gulf stores carbon and rebuilds habitat for herons, terns and waders. Seen it on my own walks.
Atmospheric CO₂ is above 420 ppm. Before the Industrial Revolution it was about 280.
The last time it was this high, humans didn't exist.
We can't undo the past. We can plant the future. 🌍
@orfonline@manini_garg Blended finance works at scale only when the first-loss capital is patient. Sovereign or multilateral tranches absorbing early risk are what bring institutional lenders into rated-constrained markets.
@JesseJenkins The social license point is underrated. People already resist data centers over water use. Add non-stop gas turbines and you get organized opposition. Firm baseload plus purpose-built cooling, the Emirates' AI approach, avoids that fight.
@cat_frampton@cat_frampton They are! And the insecticide link is the bit most people miss. Treat the animal, poison the pat, lose the beetles. That chain runs straight up to the choughs and the buzzards.
