#Azolla ponds can be made simply by digging space in the ground and lining it with polythene or dam liner. We increased our azolla production capacity by taking these simple & affordable steps.
We use simple materials for making a #brooder for our #chicks at our farm - plywood enclosure, drinker, feeder and clay pot (with charcoal) as a source of heat. As we hatch chicks in batches, each has it's own space in the brooding room.
We make efforts to plant diverse fruit trees on our farm. This year, this #pomegranate is fruitful. On a #smallfarm, it is better to invest in diversity of crops. You will always be harvesting something throughout the year. #growfood
Value the margins on your farm. You can maximise land use by growing herbs, flowers and crops along walking paths, fence and ends of planting beds. We use the margins to grow herbs like #lemongrass at #Fikirini farm. #smallfarms#growfood
Our market garden beds are amended using #biochar and high quality #compost before planting. This makes a major difference and helps our sandy soil retain moisture and nutrients. #growsoil#soilhealth
When we started our project at the #Fikirini farm, we were lucky to find some #coconut trees on the farm - the work of those who came before us. We are also making our contribution so the next generation also benefits from our toil. We planted 15 coconut trees today. #growfood
A #seedling nursery can be simple and made from locally available materials. This is our new #springonion nursery - a raised bed, composted and with some shading. We have also mulched to protect the seeds. Once they begin to grow, the #mulch will be removed. #growfood
Agroecology is transforming lives and landscapes across Kenyaโ and the stories are nothing short of powerful.

We make high quality #organic#liquidfertiliser from #seaweed at our #Fikirini farm. The seaweed is readily available at the beach. This is a major cost saving and our plants love it!
Buying pesticides at the Agro-Vet?
Here is a way to check if what you are buying is toxic:
Step 1: Check Active Ingredient, written DHAMANA on the pesticide label
Step 2: Check the active ingredient status, whether Green, Yellow or Red

Our soil at the #Fikirini farm is sandy and heavily depleted of nutrients due to leaching. So we use two key amendments: #compost and #biochar. These two are a game changer in improving our #soilhealth, retaining moisture and nutrients.
#CayennePepper seems to flourish on our market garden beds. It's fruiting and additional flowers are setting. This is our first crop of cayenne pepper. Quite a bit of demand for this in our community. #growfood
Our #kienyeji chicks are making good progress at 4 weeks. We provide them with quality feeds, clean water, clean brooder & vaccinate them on time. #smallfarms#agrobusiness
