The final decade in the life of Maulana Syed Abul A'la Maududi (رحمة الله عليه) — one of the most influential Islamic thinkers of the twentieth century and the founder of Jamaat-e-Islami — was marked by a complex blend of political struggle, intellectual labor, and physical hardship. During these years, he not only led Pakistan's democratic movement but also completed the crowning work of his life, Tafheemul Qur'an. Below is a brief chronological account of the key events from 1966 up to his passing.
1966: A resolution opposing the Tashkent Agreement was passed at the All-Parties Conference; the Maulana toured East Pakistan; in April, at a Rabita (Muslim World League) conference, the Maulana's own booklets on the Kashmir issue — written in both Arabic and English — were distributed.
1967: Along with other political parties, the Pakistan Democratic Movement (P.D.M.) was founded to restore democracy; the Maulana was barred from attending a Rabita meeting; he was arrested over the issue of moon-sighting for Eid.
1968: Amid ongoing conflict with both the government and the opposition, the Maulana travelled to London for medical treatment (15th September). He received a warm reception from British Muslims at the Hilton Hotel in London.
1969: The Maulana took part in the round-table conference convened by Ayub Khan to resolve political problems, and also attended the founding conference of the Islamic University of Morocco.
1970: Election campaigning reached its peak; on 18th January, thugs attacked the Maulana's public rally at Paltan Maidan in Dhaka. As per the Maulana's call, "Shawkat-e-Islam Day" was observed across Pakistan on 26th August. He delivered a historic speech on Jamaat's founding anniversary, warning that Pakistan would suffer if regional parties won the elections.
1972: On 7th June, the writing of Tafheemul Qur'an was completed, with its full publication following in October. On 1st November, after serving continuously as Ameer of Jamaat for thirty-one years, the Maulana stepped down from the position due to prolonged illness and physical weakness.
1979: On 22nd May, the Maulana travelled to America for treatment. On 4th September, he underwent a second bladder operation at Buffalo Hospital. On 8th September, his heart rate rose dangerously. After a brief period of improvement, his condition deteriorated again on 21st September, and he lost consciousness. On 22nd September, at 5:45 in the evening, Pakistan time, the Maulana passed away at Buffalo Hospital.
(Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji'un — "Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we shall return.")
Thus came to an end a long life filled with struggle, thought, and devotion — a life that left behind an enduring treasure of knowledge in Tafheemul Qur'an, and the legacy of a movement.

He's free, but his mind is still in a cage! The bird is outside the cage, free, but it doesn't fly! What is this trying to say? I wonder what everyone thinks.
70,000+ killed in Gaza. 20,000+ children. UK's Ed Miliband admits "ethnic cleansing" in the West Bank — but won't say genocide. Settlement imports banned. Trade with Israel stays.
Words, not action.

You inspired us to stand courageously for the Deen. Your departure is not the end, but a spark that lives on in every heart you touched. May Allah grant Shaheed Mir Quasem Ali mercy and the highest ranks in Jannah. We will carry the amanah forward.

Night whispers aren’t truth — just whispers, until I act. Willpower alone can’t win this fight. My real weapon: never being too ashamed to open my Creator’s guidebook. Shaytan only wins if I stop returning.
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْتَوْدِعُكَ نَفْسِي الَّذِي لاَ تَضِيعُ وَدَائِعُهُ
Have you ever looked into Shaheed Morsi’s eyes? That light, that unshakable resolve, that reflection of hope — did you ever really see it? He gave his last drop of blood for the sake of Deen, unwavering till the end. He never faltered.
Our guide. Our inspiration. 💚
Bangladesh will be voting in a new parliament in a few days.
My heart and prayers are always with the people of Bangladesh. I hope the people of Bangladesh choose leaders who truly care for the wellbeing of the people, work to minimize corruption, fulfill their responsibilities properly, and remember the sacrifice and spirit of the July revolution. May so much struggle and sacrifice not go in vain, and may Bangladesh grow stronger on the path of justice and humanity!! Ameen!
Over the last few decades I have travelled across the country and know firsthand the problems your local area faces. For 17 years my colleagues and I faced false charges and imprisonment yet we never abandoned our people or this land. Leadership means standing with your people in the hardest moments.
My MP candidates have no bank defaults. People have been safe from harassment and extortion (chadabaji) under them as local leaders.
I want a modern Bangladesh that is mature and ready to govern. That is why I launched the country’s first Policy Summit with global experts to deliver my manifesto and a clear 100 days governing roadmap.
This election is a choice between the old way and the new way. The decision is in your hands.

Yes, of course. They are competent, trustworthy, open, and honest individuals. They are far more capable of leading the nation than those who came before them. May Allah bless our nation with goodness
