Afghanistan’s higher education system is shrinking. According to a joint UNESCO-UNICEF report, male university enrollment fell from around 306,000 in 2019 to 208,000 in 2026—a decline of approximately 32%. Female university enrollment has been zero since 2024, following the Taliban’s ban on women’s higher education.
According to informed Taliban sources, Prime Minister Mohammad Hassan Akhund's cabinet meetings in Kabul require prior approval from Supreme Leader Hibatullah Akhundzada’s office.
The sources say the deputy prime ministers also submit their decisions to Hibatullah’s office for approval.
Peace Talks Without Ukraine? Putin has proposed a summit with the leaders of the United States and China to discuss ending the war in Ukraine. But any negotiations over Ukraine’s future that exclude Kyiv raise a fundamental question: Can a lasting peace be achieved without Ukraine’s direct participation?
In Kabul’s Arzan Qeemat area, a widowed mother, Shabana, is trying to provide food for her three children on a daily income of 150 Afghanis.
Her husband was killed nine years ago in the Zanbaq Square bombing. The government assistance she received was later discontinued. Today, her nine-year-old son sometimes collects discarded vegetables from the market to help prepare the family’s evening meal.
Shabana’s circumstances reflect the challenges faced by many Afghan families affected by years of conflict, loss of family members, and ongoing economic hardship.

The Taliban’s Foreign Ministry condemned civilian casualties at Riyadh and other Saudi airports in a measured response, but did not explicitly condemn the attacks carried out by Houthi forces.
