This evening I sat back and watched Lil’ Deafblind Sullivan with his leaf and imagined if only we could all enjoy the little things in life a bit more. Autumn is his season because as the leaves begin to fall, it becomes a playground for a special dog. Each morning as soon as he awakes, he wanders into the yard, searching for the perfect catch of the day; a leaf. A simple, dried leaf. He will carry that particular treasure throughout the house, with the most adorable joy, until it eventually crumbles to pieces. Then he simply heads out to find another, and the whole process repeats. For months, this will be his routine.
Something as simple as leaves falling from a tree, that we may find as a bit of a nuisance, becomes an absolute gift to Sully. Needless to say, leaf blowing and raking are not a priority in this household because I just can’t remove any possible candidates for his treasure. I never thought I’d look at dried leaves the way I do. Another life lesson taught to me from a four legged friend. 🍁
