🎉 Happy birthday Esa-Pekka Salonen! 🎉
Back in 1983, an unknown young Finnish conductor made his Philharmonia debut at the Royal Festival Hall in London, stepping in at a few days’ notice to conduct Mahler’s epic Symphony No. 3. Seen here almost 37 years later as the Principal Conductor, Esa-Pekka Salonen took on Mahler's immense and breath-taking symphony once again.
Now titled as our Conductor Laureate, we wish Esa-Pekka the happiest of birthdays. May it be as triumphant as Mahler's 3rd!

Claudio Abbado.
One of the great conductors of his generation.
Admired for his musical insight, humility and ability to inspire orchestras.
His simple rehearsal instruction was often just one word:
“Listen.”

Headed to Carnegie Hall NYC to hear Mahler's 4th, a venue where Mahler himself was a conductor. This particular symphony came out in 1901. It followed the 3rd which was HUGE and seemed universal, all embracing, heavily philosophical, and mighty beyond description. Audiences booed the 4th because it was SMALL; it extolled country life, private life, simple love, simple things, almost as if Mahler was saying: you want meaning? Look around you. Meaning is your life as you decide to live it!
Mahler decided not to become the philosopher king that his fans wanted and chose instead the role of a poet and narrator of the small pleasures of the bourgeoisie. At least for this symphony (the 5th was another matter). Fascinating turn this symphony was for him. I get to hear it live for the first time tonight.
It's also hilarious to me that it was booed at the debut. Audiences were really different in those days!
