Noon Meem Rashid (1910–1975), born Nazar Muhammad Janjua, was one of the leading figures of modern Urdu poetry. A pioneer of free verse, he broke away from traditional forms and gave Urdu nazm a new style and direction. His poetry explored the human mind, individual freedom, and the search for a more just and open world. Known as a 'sculptor of words,' Rashid brought remarkable precision to his verses, combining rich language with deep thought. His major collections, including 'Māvarā' and 'Iran Mein Ajnabi', remain landmarks in the evolution of modern Urdu literature.

Begum Akhtar, born Akhtari Bai Faizabadi in 1914, was a celebrated Indian classical singer and actress widely hailed as "Mallika-e-Ghazal" (Queen of Ghazals). Trained under renowned masters of Hindustani music, she made her public debut at age fifteen and broke tradition by transitioning from private mehfils to public concert stages. Alongside her vocal career, she acted in several Hindi films during the 1930s and 1940s, including Mehboob Khan's Roti, before fully devoting herself to pure classical performance. After a brief hiatus following her 1945 marriage to barrister Ishtiaq Ahmed Abbasi, she returned to recording and All India Radio, eventually building a discography of nearly four hundred songs. Recognized for her emotive, raag-based compositions, she earned prestigious national honors including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Padma Shri, and a posthumous Padma Bhushan. She fell ill during a concert in Ahmedabad and passed away on October 30, 1974, leaving an indelible legacy across the ghazal, thumri, and dadra genres.
