The main features:·
SCI occurs on peripheral VA ECMO with femoral artery cannulation
· SCI affects men and women of any age, in about equal proportion
· Clinically, SCI presents as sensory and then motor neurological deficit of both legs
· Fecal incontinence and urinary incontinence/retention is not uncommon, but the prevalence is unknown
· Usual level of injury is thoracic or lumber spine, but it can start at lower cervical levels as well
· MRI is the most adequate imaging modality
· Hyperintense T2 longitudinal signal, consistent with spinal infarct/ischemia, is usually present
· The neurological deficit is usually irreversible or only partially reversible with significant residual deficits
· When the presentation is leg weakness rather than paraplegia, partial recovery seems to be more likely
