During Gregor Robertson’s @gregorrobertson time as Vancouver Mayor from 2008 to 2018, massive amounts of dirty money from China and Asian criminal networks poured into BC real estate, especially luxury condos. This foreign hot money supercharged the speculative boom that developers like Daljit Thind and others rode hard, building thousands of investor focused units that now sit empty.

Instead of cracking down, Robertson’s Vision Vancouver government, heavily funded by those same developers, approved wave after wave of towers while the problem grew. The BC NDP, who took over provincially, then deliberately downplayed China’s role in money laundering. Their own Cullen Commission inquiry was softened, with senior lawyer Brock Martland admitting they avoided criticizing China. The NDP’s 2020 platform didn’t even mention money laundering.

To top it off, Vancouver officials under Robertson’s successor hijacked the term “Vancouver Model,” originally coined to describe exactly how Chinese elites and syndicates laundered dirty money through Vancouver properties, and redefined it as drug decriminalization. This was a deliberate deflection to protect the real estate gravy train.

Now the bubble has burst. The same political machine, with Robertson as federal Housing Minister working with Premier David Eby, is using 3.2 billion dollars in taxpayer money to bail out the very developers and lenders who profited from the dirty money fueled boom.

It is one continuous corrupt loop: foreign dirty money inflates the market, politicians take developer donations and look the other way, overbuilding creates a glut, taxpayers are forced to rescue the connected players when it collapses. Robertson sits at the center of this, from selling access as mayor to announcing the bailout as minister, while ordinary Canadians pay for the cleanup.

UPDATE: The day after we attempted to begin clean-up of the kill pen at Universal Ostrich Farms, CFIA sent an e-mail stating the quarantine is still in effect, after 7 months, and we could face fines or PROSECUTION if we continue.

I have found live ammunition left behind and there is now concerns of fire starting as the bales dry. A fire poses risks to the property here as well as adjoining properties and the entire Valley

The government won't clean up their mess, they won't allow anyone else to clean it up, the family is forced to look at it everyday and if anyone tries to help they will be prosecuted.

They expect the family to implement biosecurity protocols that they never followed themselves.

Young people in BC have been effectively priced out of the housing market. And, as with any speculative mania, someone eventually ends up holding overpriced assets that they can’t move. So rather than letting the market discipline the speculative excesses of the developers, and do young homebuyers a huge service, our corporate collectivist governments team up to bail them out and give the bill to the taxpayers. Granular knowledge of how the Vancouver Condo Kings are the major supporters of people like Gregor Robertson, Justin Trudeau and Mark Carney was my past reporting beat. I’m not going back to it, other reporters need to pick that up. Read JWR’s chapter about meeting Trudeau in his friend’s pent house to understand who Carney is bailing out. I can say the Chinese money behind all these Liberals makes the story so much worse than a Liberal bail out of slick developers. This is scandalous and nationally ruinous.
