There’s a line from Roy Keane autobiography in 2002, where he talks about the mentality of the United team in the first 15 minutes of games. I’m paraphrasing, but it was along the lines of “we know we have more quality than any other team, the only thing the opposition could ever be better at than us is intensity and fight. So for the first 15 minutes we always go out high intensity, starting from the tunnel. We let them know within 15 minutes that they won’t even beat us at duels and battles, then when we’ve killed their spirit, we start playing football”.

When Daddy and Mum visited South Africa in 1966, they purposely flew over Robben Island at a low altitude and asked the pilot to wave his wings, knowing that Nelson Mandela and his band of brothers were below. Daddy never had the chance to meet Mandela because Mandela was imprisoned at the time. But decades later, when I stood in Cape Town for Mandela’s inauguration, Mandela told me that Daddy's visit to the University of Cape Town, where he gave his iconic "Ripple of Hope" speech, meant a great deal to the Anti-Apartheid Movement.

In 1996, Mum returned to South Africa to commemorate the 30th anniversary of that historic trip, visiting university campuses, community organizations in Soweto and Crossroads, talking to business leaders, union officials, artists, members of the Mandela administration, Bishop Tutu and other faith leaders, and as many locals as she could reach.

Then a call came from Mandela’s office inviting Mum to Johannesburg for an impromptu breakfast at his home. She always spoke of that morning with deep affection and admiration for Mandela’s resilience: a man once imprisoned, now South Africa’s first Black president. That's the video you're watching.

On Nelson Mandela Day, I'm reflecting on Mandela’s extraordinary legacy and the courage and hope that continue to inspire people around the world to this day.
