OTD August 7, in 1942...as dawn broke out over the Pacific, the 1st Marine Division launched the first major U.S. ground offensive of WWII in the Pacific, storming the Solomon Islands at
Guadalcanal,
Tulagi, Gavutu, and Tanambogo.

Nice to see the Rifleman’s Creed on the back of this book. Gen. Rupertus wrote this in early 1942. It was published in the Marine Corps San Diego Chevron March 1942 before he joined the 1stMarineDiv as ADC in New River, NC. 🇺🇸

On December 26,1943, the 1stMarDiv landed on Cape Gloucester in the Pacific. Though the enemy’s resistance ended on Jan.16, 1944, we stayed on CG to “mop up” until the Army relieved us in April, 1944. ⁦⁦

On 12/13/1937, the Rape of Nanking began.

On 12/12/1937, the Japanese bombed the USS Panay, evacuating Americans from Nanking, killing three men, wounding 43 sailors & five civilians.

At the time, Rupertus was in Shanghai w/ the @4thMarines.

Shanghai had fallen Nov. 1937.
