Russia earns transit fees, icebreaker rents, and showcases its Arctic gatekeeper role. China gains redundancy for exports and a new lever in supply chain bargaining.
But risks are high: seasonal ice, fragile infrastructure, sanctions exposure, insurance costs, and environmental backlash. Throughput remains a fraction of Suez capacity.
If Beijing can repeat this service across multiple seasons and expand ice-class fleets, the NSR may evolve from a niche route into a credible alternative - tightening Sino-Russian interdependence and reshaping global trade geography at the margins as an alternative to the US-controlled Indo-Pacific maritime route. If not, it remains an option value rather than a real geopolitical gamechanger. From Russian perspective, the real value of the project stems from the geoeconomic diversification amid Western sanctions and the future facilitation of trade and commodities flows along the Northern Sea Route without American interference.
