Medical Association of Jamaica president since 26/9/21. Joining the convo on healthcare related matters; COVID-19, vaccinations, NCDs, hospitals, GPs etc
The Medical Association of Jamaica draws the public's attention to the @themohwgovjm release and urges us all to heed the recommendations of the public health authorities. This disease can be devastating, especially in children.
The UWI Faculty of Science & Technology is in the conversation on Climate Change and Global Warming. Join us this afternoon at 4pm. #ClimateActionNow
It is important that we learn about the symptoms of heat illness and what preventive measures to employ. #ClimateActionNow#GlobalWarming

The MAJ joins other Healthcare leaders in the Caribbean in highlighting the need to recognize and address the real and urgent phenomenon of Climate Change. The collision between climate change and healthcare cannot be ignored. Immediate action is needed. #GlobalWarming
CO2 and global warming:
โ๏ธ โฌ๏ธCO2 in the atmosphere with industrialization -energy from fossil fuel
โ๏ธLight from the sun comes to the earth
โ๏ธThe heat is radiated back into the atmosphere
โ๏ธ โฌ๏ธCO2 in the atmosphere reflects more heat back toward the earth

Let us understand some of the terminology of Climate Change. They will help us formulate solutions and take part in climate action #climatechange#globalwarming
Jamaicans need to realize 5 things:
๐๐พ CO2 emission by humans is heating the earth.
๐๐พ Heat has severe negative effects on our health.
๐๐พ We must move quickly to save the one planet we have.
๐๐พ There are solutions, most of which save money.
๐๐พ The entire Jamaica needs to act.
"Climate mitigation - the greatest public health opportunity of our time." (Lancet, 2015).
"The health co-benefits associated with reduction strategies offer extraordinary value for money."
Avoidance of ill health and productivity gains can outstrip emission reduction costs.
Jamaica must be a leader in climate action. Kingston is the second city in the world where the coolest year after 2005 is hotter than the hottest year ever. We are crossing a rubicon called climate departure! Indifference and inaction are not viable options!#globalwarming
We need to keep an eye on the various health effects of climate change. "We are the first generation to feel the effects of climate change and the last generation who can do something about it." US President Obama #globalwarming
We must questions whether the heat is a part of the explanation for high ward occupancy and overcrowding in A&E awaiting space on the ward. Every 1 degree rise in temperature increases the cardiovascular mortality by 3.4%. Climate change is real and urgent. #globalwarming
The MAJ notes the warnings from ODPEM regarding the expectation for very hot weather this summer. The effects of global warming and climate change are very real and we have a diminishing opportunity to take mitigating action. The conversation and action must involve us all.
Dr. Wendel Guthrie was awarded MAJ's highest honor, Fellow of the Medical Association of Jamaica at their annual banquet on Saturday at the Pegasus. Dr. Aggrey Irons, Dr. Colin Abel and Dr. Guyan Arscott also received MAJ awards. Dr. Michael Abrahams was MC & ASHE entertained.
Prof. Taylor. In his Mike D'Silva lecture at MAJ Symposium 2023 made a compelling case that "climate change is the biggest global health threat of the 21st century". He proffered a powerful entreaty to us - Acknowledge it, contemplate it and tackle it. @themohwgovjm@djmillerJA
Prof. Michael Taylor delivered the Mike D'Silva lecture at the MAJ Symposium 2023. His riveting delivery of "Climate change and Health, three sides of the coin", challenged the healthcare community to see the challenge of climate change as a chance to make the right choice.
MAJ Symposium 2023 included a public forum looking at mercury containing skin-lightening (bleaching) creams and their environmental effects. @themohwgovjm were partners in this part of the conference. #Mercury . We cannot afford to ignore this public health threat.
The Sympodium "Protecting our world, securing our health" achieved the objective of educating the medical community about the seriousness and immediacy of the environmental reality facing us! https://t.co/Hn15iAoPSL
