“I think… I just needed to know someone still wished me well.”
Another silence.
Then my ex said, “I was embarrassed that you kept being kind when I couldn’t even answer.”
We’ve never gotten back together.
That was never the point.
Now, every once in a while, one of us sends the other a message just to ask how life is going.
Moi University, Eldoret, is grieving the heartbreaking loss of Dickson Mutinda, a second-year BBM student in the School of Business and Economics. It is alleged that he committed suicide and left a note that read:
A Final Message, To those I love/cared. I am writing this because I have reached a point where I can no longer keep fighting. I want you to know I gave every bit of my heart that I had. I tried, I tried to stay, I tried to find a way through the dark, and I tried to be the person you needed me to be.
But I am so tired. I feel my life slipping away, and as much as I want to hold on for you, I feel like I am being pulled somewhere else. I feel like there is nothing left for me to do and no more strength left to give.
Please forgive me, please don’t blame yourselves or wonder what you could have done differently. You gave me love, and that love was the only thing that kept me here this long. My departure isn’t a reflection of how much I loved you. It’s only a reflection of how much I am hurting.
I am so sorry to leave you with this sorrow. If I could have stayed without this pain, I would have. I hope one day when you think of me, the weight of this goodbye is replaced by the memory of the time we were happy.
I am letting go now because I have to. I am so sorry. With all my love and my deepest regrets, Dickson Mwenda
