The richest man on earth spent 20 hours under oath insisting he didn’t know what the word “definition” means.

August 1998, Redmond, one camera on Bill Gates at 42, and a lawyer named David Boies with one job get a plain English sentence out of him.

Boies asks if Disney is an important content provider, and Gates says he can’t answer without context.

He won’t say what a proprietary API is, won’t say what it means to control Java, won’t concede that “important” and “very very important” mean roughly the same thing.

An exec emails him that Microsoft will be “pissing on” Java at every opportunity, and when Boies asks if that means saying unkind things, Gates says the term has multiple meanings.

Then Boies reads a timestamp aloud 9:25 p.m. and Gates cuts in, because the email says 9:26.

He remembers the minute exactly and can’t remember writing the sentence under it.

Last exhibit is his own email, flagged importance: high, and when Boies asks who set that flag, Gates says a computer did.

The DOJ played the tape in open court, Judge Jackson laughed out loud from the bench, and in April 2000 he ordered Microsoft cut in 2.

Gates won every single word and lost the whole company’s decade.
