Jeremy: we went through this in the aftermath of Katrina when people were questioned if they were a true New Orleanian because they moved to the city to help rebuild it. They loved the city that we had lost and wanted to be a part of its rebirth after the destruction. It didn’t matter if you had been there 50 years or 5 minutes you had a voice because you were committed to the restoration. You were a New Orleanian. There isn’t a degree of citizenship. I thought we learned our lesson after centuries of considering my people 3/5 of a human being as our beloved constitution states. If you ever go to a naturalization ceremony when people take the oath, you feel the catharsis instantly in that moment when they become a U.S.citizen. It beautiful. They don’t have to wait a moment longer to engage the country they are now a citizen of. And if you use your Christianity metaphor of a new devotee , remember what happened on the cross: one of the men being crucified that day turned to Jesus and asked for forgiveness and Christ said, “ on this day you shall enter the kingdom of heaven “. He was saved in that moment. He didn’t have to wait for Glory. When a person becomes an American, in that instant they don’t have to wait to be a citizen in our democracy. Mayor Mamdani is an American leading the city that he was elected to serve as they exercise their right of self determination. American democracy at work.
"The success of the US mens national soccer team comes in spite of Trump, not because of him. Half of the roster is made up of dual citizenship holders, foreign-born players, and children of immigrants. Coach Mauricio Pochettino is Argentine. This team is a repudiation of everything Trump stands for and is working towards. It could never exist in the world that Trump has tried to bring about with his brutal immigration crackdowns and isolationist foreign policy. You can’t take credit for the success of the team while simultaneously trying to eliminate the conditions necessary for it to exist."

@Joshstrangehill Uncanny seeing you pop up today as we were talking about Futurama only last night backstage waiting to walk on for the last set of the tour. One of the band came over all Zoidberg, and me saying how much I must watch it all again.
Just brilliant :-)
This Canadian team changed how a country sees itself on the world's biggest stage.
Thank you for making history. Thank you for making us believe.
Proud to be Canadian today and every day.

During the filming of Gone With the Wind in 1939, Clark Gable noticed that the restrooms on set had signs saying “White” and “Colored.” This meant Hattie McDaniel and other Black actors were not allowed to use the same restrooms as white actors. Gable was very upset. He told the director that if the signs were not taken down, he would quit the movie. The studio, afraid of losing him, removed the signs.
Clark Gable also showed kindness to Hattie McDaniel in other ways. He sat with her, ate with her, and treated her with respect when many people at the time did not. Their friendship stood out in a world full of unfair rules. Later, McDaniel made history as the first Black actor to win an Oscar, a moment that opened doors for many others after her.
Today should have been Saffie-Rose Roussos 18th birthday but she was murdered in the Manchester Arena bombing in May 2017. Happy Birthday sweetheart. You are remembered. You are loved.
This is Cllr Rick Rowe, for the Green Party Chiswick Riverside. He proposed to stop outside seating in pubs along the Thames, which was critiallly commented on by Alastair. Rowe sent two police officers to warn him off about X posting on this issue & was threatened with arrest.
Last evening Rowe & his boyfriend visited the pub Alastair was drinking in. He was filmed & Rowe tried to grab his phone.
It appears the @MetCC Police passed on confidential information to Rowe.
When a Nigerian born nun is being picked up by ICE on her way to mass in Texas, you know it was never about "violent criminals," just the color of someone's skin.

Nicola Coughlan has stated that colleagues warned her speaking out on Palestine could damage her career. She responded: "I can’t throw away my moral conscience. True activism should cost you something."
I am having a drink this evening with a friend in a Chiswick pub. Two policemen have just come into the pub and asked me to step outside. I have stepped outside and they have threatened me because I tweeted about a councillor banning seating outside pubs in Chiswick. They admit on video (watch it!) that I did not break the law at all. They came to threaten me. To warn me off tweeting about councillors and the council. This is modern Britain. This is the police state. Please, please, please watch this video. It does involve me using very bad language, but this has got to be seen. Police coming out to threaten someone who hasn’t committed a crime. I’m fuming.
