The internet constantly tells women that men are terrible listeners because the second a woman starts venting about her day, the man immediately interrupts to offer a logical solution. We are taught to view this as him being dismissive, emotionally unintelligent, or invalidating our feelings.
The strict, unpopular truth is that to a man, fixing the problem is his absolute highest, most desperate form of empathy.
Women vent to connect; we want our partner to just sit in the dark with us and validate the emotion. But men are hardwired to view the woman they love being in distress as an active threat. When he immediately offers a spreadsheet, a strategy, or a solution to your problem, he isn't trying to silence you. His brain has recognized that something in the world is hurting his partner, and his immediate, visceral instinct is to assassinate the thing causing you pain.
We constantly shame men for "not just listening," completely ignoring the fact that his attempt to fix your life is his most profound declaration of love.
I was heading home yesterday when a little girl selling plantains pleaded with me to buy from her. I decided to get two sets, and when it was time to make payment, she asked me to transfer the money to the woman selling beside her. As I was doing that, I told her to pack the plantains for me. After completing the transfer, I thanked them and left, only to get home and realize she had removed one plantain from each set.
A similar thing happened when I accompanied my aunt to the market, but that time, the seller was an elderly woman. I was on my phone while my aunt was trying to withdraw cash to pay, and when the woman thought no one was watching, she sneakily cut off one plantain from the bunch. I let her know I saw her and asked her to add it back.
I didn’t think I needed any level of vigilance when buying from a child.
Now I wonder if this is what people mean when they brag about being "streetwise" in this state. This isn’t being smart; it is THEFT. And when the young and old begin to see deceit as a skill, it says a lot about where we’re headed as a society.

Before I left Nigeria for the UK, my monthly tax was over 250k…
Despite that, I pay for healthcare;
My shock absorbers gets damaged every 6 months or so & I replace with my money;
I pay for my children’s school fees;
I pay for my water;
I pay to contribute whenever the transformer gets spoilt;
I still queue for fuel…
If I am still in Nigeria, with this new tax system, I will be paying almost 500k tax & still nothing to show for it.
Where I am now, I’m excited to pay 25% tax but kids go to school for free & are fed daily for free, I don’t drive trying to avoid potholes anyhow, free healthcare, amongst many others.
Guess what? The government pays my kids $600 each monthly for just being children.
Something is wrong with your brain if you are advocating for this new tax system while there is no improvement in quality of life after even removal of fuel subsidy.
For the first time today, I realized that the problem of Nigeria is not leadership per say, but the opportunists nature of its citizens.
I was scheduled for an appointment at the Russian Embassy Abuja by 11am today, and somehow, I missed my way to the Embassy. Instead of the Russian Embassy, I found myself at the UN Office which had the same structure painting with the Russian Embassy. I checked my time and it was 10:42am. Looking frustrated, I asked for directions and the security guards directed me to a cluster of Taxi Drivers at the opposite side. I crossed to the other side and immediately about five of the Taxi Drivers rushed towards me.
"Oga where you dey go"? They asked simultaneously
"Russian Embassy" I responded
"Ahhhhh! Russian Embassy. E far o" one of the men responded.
"Is about two hours drive from here" the man added
"How much will you take me there"? I asked
"Oga na 30k o" he responded
My heart skip.
I was pleading and negotiating with this man to please accept 20k as I was running out of time but he stood his ground.
A Hausa man hawking orange who was following our conversation, came behind me and whispered in Hausa "Dan dai kana sauri ne, Amman akasama zaka iya zuwa Russian Embassy" (if not because you are in a haste, you can trek to Russian Embassy).
The orange hawker then instructed me to follow him. I checked my time and it was 10:49am.
We trekked few miles, take just two turns and crossed over an overhead bridge. Boom! We are at the front of Russian Embassy.
I checked my time and it was 10:57am. I could not help but hug the man tightly until the orange on his stray start falling. We chatted for few minutes. He told me he came all the way from Ingawa Local Government in Katsina State. I told him I am from Funtua local government in Katsina State. We quickly exchange contact and I dash off.
While waiting for my turn to be invited into the Embassy, my mind traveled back to the Taxi Driver I was desperately begging to accept 20k. Some of us are worse than the leaders we complain everyday about. It's just opportunity we lack.

Diary of a Traveler
The real soup is the fact that our aspirations are getting smaller
More Nigerians are beginning to think “it's okay if you never own a house”
People are dying because health bills are costlier, & some Nigerians are saying “the poor should not have kids”
This is the real soup.
A VERY close high school friend of mine didn’t invite me to his wedding earlier this year. It was so weird everyone at the wedding kept calling and asking if I’m late…
He called me two weeks ago and I ignored his call. ✨
