#BreakingNews: Kenya's official presidential website was allegedly hacked after cyber attackers defaced the homepage with insulting messages targeting President William Ruto and demanded a ransom of 5 Bitcoins (about USD 320,000).
The hackers claimed they would release unspecified information about the President unless the ransom was paid before a stated deadline. Part of the message read: "This message is the third time for you; before we leak everything about you. Do a payment of 5 bitcoins to the Bitcoin wallet...if you want peace before 6 o'clock this evening."
A spot check by Africa Global News on Saturday found that the defaced homepage had been removed. Instead, visitors to the website were met with a blank white page, suggesting the site had been taken offline or was undergoing restoration as authorities worked to contain the breach.
At the time of this publication, Kenyan authorities had not issued an official statement on the incident or verified the authenticity of the hackers' claims.
