“Israeli society is sick in it's core... Israel’s fascist transformation is a process that can be perceived more from below than from the top of its institutions. You can see it in the widespread mockery of the aravim (few people call Palestinians by their actual name); in the arrogance of the settlers, which now contaminates the conduct of young soldiers; in the shameless display of cruelty experienced as a manifestation of power; in the misogynistic contempt for a feminine, submissive Europe; in the pleasure taken in offending other people’s religions.

Are these behaviors limited to only a minority of Israelis? True. Is it almost certain that democratic elections will take place next September and could send Netanyahu home? True. Have the attempts to undermine the Supreme Court’s role as a guarantor through legislation failed? True.

But the recklessness with which the government has conceived a sequence of endless wars, in an attempt to satisfy the Israeli public’s craving for security after the existential trauma of October 7, suggests what fascist regimes have always done when isolated and distrusted: turn their weapons against the internal enemy. A civil war unleashed by settlers and Ben-Gvir’s militias would not be a remote possibility if a new Israeli leadership, compelled by the United States and the European Union, were to decree territorial concessions in favor of a nascent Palestinian state.

Whether and how this fascistization can be reversed is therefore the defining question of the moment. Faced with it, we cannot remain mere spectators. Effective external pressure is necessary: a halt to military supplies and commercial agreements from allied governments whose benevolence has so far encouraged Israel to pursue a project of regional hegemony that is both criminal and unrealistic...

But the decisive struggle over the future of a state that, if it persists in supremacist expansionism and the persecution of Palestinians, will have no choice but to transform definitively into an authoritarian regime, is taking place within the Jewish world itself.

During a recent visit, I was struck by how widespread the instinct to deny the crimes committed by the Israeli armed forces is, even among Netanyahu’s opponents (who are the majority) and among enlightened seekers of peace with the Palestinians (who today are a minority). To become fully aware of how far Israel has fallen would mean watching the collapse of the idea you had of the place dearest to you, often the refuge your family reached after immense suffering. Leaving it is impossible for many and, even for those who can, it still feels like a failure.

As difficult as it may be, overcoming the instinct to deny reality is indispensable if one wants to strengthen society’s immune defenses against this civilizational decay. Fascism and fanaticism in Israel are not new problems. What is new, perhaps, is the danger of finding oneself without antibodies.”

Una de las cosas más increíbles de vivir en España es el contraste que nadie te explica bien.

Conoces a personas en Estados Unidos que ganan $200, $300 mil dólares al año y que están ansiosas, exhaustas, medicadas, trabajando 70 horas semanales, sin vacaciones, sin tiempo para nada, mirando el techo a las tres de la mañana preguntándose cuándo van a poder parar.

Luego ves España…

Y ves a un tipo que trabaja de administrativo, que gana 1.800 euros al mes, que trabaja 40 horas a la semana, se toma un mes de vacaciones en agosto sin culpa, que come con calma, y se toma su café sin prisa, que los fines de semana desaparece del trabajo como si el trabajo no existiera.

Y duerme perfectamente bien por la noche.

La diferencia no es el dinero. Es el modelo. En Estados Unidos te venden el sueño de acumular. En España viven el presente sin disculparse por ello. La sanidad no te arruina. El despido no te deja en la calle sin red. Las vacaciones no son un privilegio que te ganas: son un derecho que nadie te discute.

¿Ganas menos? Sí. ¿Tienes menos? Depende de cómo midas. Porque si mides en horas de sueño, en almuerzos tranquilos, en años de vida sin ansiedad crónica, en poder enfermarte sin que te llegue una factura de $40,000… entonces la pregunta no es por qué España gana menos. La pregunta es por qué seguimos midiendo todo en función al dinero y no en función a la calidad de vida que tienes.
