Romans 8:26 - Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.

"Likewise" alludes to the groaning of believers and the creation for deliverance from the taint and filth of sin. Because we are still fallible human beings, prone to sin and uncertainty, the Holy Spirit also helps us when we are weak. Rather than referring to particular flaws, weakness in this context most likely alludes to our human condition as a whole. The key idea is that we remain weak spiritually even after we are saved. The only way we can act morally, speak truth, serve as witnesses for the Lord, or accomplish any other good deed is by the power of the Spirit operating in and through us in spite of our corrupt human bodies.

Paul moves on to the topic of prayer in order to clarify how the Spirit operates. Even though we have been redeemed and are completely safe in our adoption as God's children, we are not spiritually discerned enough to know how to pray properly. We are not able to pray in a way that is totally consistent with God's will because of our flawed viewpoints, limited minds, human frailties, and spiritual limitations. Oftentimes, we are not even conscious that we have spiritual needs, much less aware of the best ways to satisfy them. It is impossible for any Christian, no matter how genuine, devout, and consistent their prayer life, to fully understand God's plan for meeting all of their needs and the needs of those they pray for.

Paul highlights that the Spirit Himself is our help. His supernatural assistance is direct as well as personal. Paul states that the Spirit prays for us in a way that is completely beyond our understanding and that has groanings that are too deep to put into words. I think it’s safe to say we’ve all been in a place where grief and sorrow has so stricken us that we can’t even speak. We struggle to communicate our purest affection and our deepest feelings through spoken words.

Among all the depths of human nature, the most intimate revelation comes from inarticulate speech. Love sometimes speaks through the look in our eye and maybe a soft touch; grief can talk louder in a soft sob than with words. The deepest longings of a Christian's heart cannot be contained within the limited vocabulary we possess. Instead, those inaudible longings must be acknowledged as the voice of the Holy Spirit. Think about what this means - the God of the Universe knows we are too ignorant and feeble to even comprehend what to ask God to do for us; so in His affection for us the Holy Spirit acts on our behalf in our prayers. His mercy is inexhaustible!
