Zimbabwe has challenged seed houses to prioritise climate-smart varieties and agro-ecological matching as preparations gather pace for the 2026/27 summer cropping season amid forecasts of a possible El Niño-induced dry spell. Zimbabwe Tobacco Output Surges as Industry Eyes Vision 2030 and Sustainability. On the sidelines of the International Tobacco Growers Association Africa Regional Meeting in Harare, Hon. Minister Dr. A.J. Masuka said tobacco production has grown by about 90% to a record 355 million kg in 2025. Projections for this year are 380–400 million kg, moving toward the Vision 2030 target of 500 million kg under the leadership of His Excellency President E.D. Mnangagwa. He described tobacco as a key rural transformation crop, with over 135,000 farmers, 85% of them smallholders , earning an average of about US$10,000 annually. This reinforces Zimbabwe’s position as Africa’s leading producer, while the country is placing growing emphasis on value addition by learning from models like India’s. ITGA CEO Ms. Mercedes Vasquez praised Zimbabwean tobacco as among the world’s highest quality, citing experienced growers and strong production systems. She added that future competitiveness will depend on sustainability, traceability, environmental protection, and compliance with tightening global market regulations.@HeraldZimbabwe@obertjiri@ZCFU_official@zfu_official@timb_zw@ZimTobaccoExpo@ZBCNewsonline@ZTNPrime@RadioZim263@ZiFMStereoNews
